Cranleigh Games and Daniel's 18th birthday

We all had a good morning playing boule and welcoming members of the public who came to have a go at Petanque.  Instead of coffee this morning we  all celebrated Daniels 18th birthday; champagne, cakes and presents! We lit the candles on the cake and set the fire alarms off!
After the celebrations we went back out and we all tried to shoot an egg at 10 mts to win a bottle of Pastis without success!
We played on until 4pm welcoming another couple of guests so a successful day was had by all.

Visit of Cranleigh Mothers Union

On Wednesday we had an evening visit from the Cranleigh Mothers Union. This turned into an evening of fun and laughter for the ladies. Lots of boule was played until it got dark then we adjourned to the club house for drinks. They have decided to come back again in the Summer when we can take advantage of the warm weather.-

Visit of Regional Coach

We had great pleasure in welcoming Chris our Regional Coach for a morning of  coaching.
This included pointing and shooting skills followed by tactical play.
All our members both experienced and beginners learned useful pointers from the session.
We would all like to thank Chris for taking the time to give us the benefit of his experience and skills.

Important note to visiting clubs

Due to recent changes at our Club and EPA rulings could you please forward this Notice to your Club members.

“Non-members of the Cranleigh Village Sports and Social Club are no longer able to use the car parking at the club unless they are attending functions which are being held at the club. All of our club members are now issued with parking permits which must be displayed.

Secondly due to the new insurance from the EPA, only EPA members are insured to play on our piste; it is recommended that all other non EPA players have their own insurance.
No non club players are able to use our piste unless they are accompanied by a member of the Cranleigh Petanque Club Committee or taking part in an organized session.”

We look forward to meeting you all at our forthcoming events

English Petanque Association Insurance

The EPA Management Committee has arranged a new insurance package for 2012:

  • The maximum cover is now £5m (note that paragraph 5.3 of the Southern Counties Pétanque Association  Constitution and Rules sates that "Registered Clubs shall be such Pétanque Clubs as are admitted to the SCPA having a Constitution and Rules that do not conflict with the SCPA's. The Officers of such Clubs shall be and remain members of the SCPA. Registered Clubs may admit members who are not members of the SCPA/EPA but such members shall not be entitled to any of the rights and privileges of membership of the SCPA/EPA and shall hold third party liability insurance equivalent to that afforded to members of the SCPA/EPA in respect of any activities related to pétanque").
  • Advertised "Come and Try" events are covered as they are looking to engage with the public and encourage them to participate and join the EPA.  People will be insured as long as they take part in no more than three "Come and Try" events.  That could be one held by the region and one more from each of two different clubs then that would be considered the person's "full quota" and they would only be insured once they have joined the EPA.
  • Exhibitions and shows are more likely to be organised through the EPA MC and as such are covered.  Local events, such as the Horsham French Weekend, are covered are covered as the SCPA is demonstrating the the sport and encouraging new players and members and the time demonstrating the techniques and rudimentary play is quite short, say 20-30 minutes.
  • The EPA insurance only covers members playing in the United Kingdom and not anywhere else.  The exceptions to this is that the EPA Insurance will cover players participating in representative events, such as the World or European Championships, or Invitational events where England, through the EPA, has been invited to send a team.  All other events where playing is the focus, such as twinning or similar will not be covered under the EPA policy and players are strongly recommended to check that their own travel insurance policy covers playing.
  • As ever, members must be aware that any claim is subject to scrutiny by the Insurers and no there is no guarantee that a claim will be successful.  However, completing Risk Assessments prior to any event may well increase the possibility of a successful outcome.

NDL Cranleigh v Crondal Lions

In the first rain for months we travelled to Crondall for our first match in the North Downs League.
The evening stayed mainly dry with just a few quick showers.
Joan and Daniel, Emma and Peter  and Lesley and Jeff all won our first games. In the second round Joan and Daniel picked up our fourth win.
Going into the last round we needed one win to take the match; Lesley and Jeff just managed to pull out the stops to take the win. This gives us our first match win and puts us third in the league table.
Thanks to Crondall for providing a good evening's boule and tasty food afterwards.

Celebrating Frank's Ninetieth Birthday

On Saturday 24th of March thirty players attended Frank's ninetieth birthday celebrations at our club.
We were joined by his daughter Lesley and  members of his old club.
After two games of boule, Frank blew out the candles on his cake and we all had a glass of champagne to toast the birthday boy. Our Club presented Frank with a leather bound edition of The Times for the
day that he was born.

Old Time music to play by!

Frank has already put in his order for his 100th Birthday cake!
