Cranleigh Petanque Club, the new North Downs League Champions.....

On Tuesday evening both Oxshott and Cranleigh travelled to Kirdford for the finals  of the North Downs League.
The weather report was for heavy rain, none appeared until we all went home.
There was quite a crowd of supporters who had come to watch the finals, including the Chairman and the Secretary  of the North Downs league accompanied by their wives.
The match got under way at 7.30 and we decided to play all games to the end and not to have timed games.
Cranleigh won the first two games in round one but lost the last.
In round two Cranleigh maintained the first round success by winning a further two games.
Going into round three the score was 4 - 2 to Cranleigh. Oxshott now started to play boules taking the first two games in the round. This left the last game to decide who would be this years Champions, after a slow start Joan and Ash slowly over took  David and Pam. David and Pam came back and the score was all square at 10 - 10.  Joan put in the final shots and Cranleigh took the game and match with a match score of 5 - 4 to Cranleigh.
We would like to thanks Amities Boule Club for the use of their terrain for the evening and the Foresters for supplying the soup and sandwiches after the match.
Finally we would like to thank Oxshott for a terrific final which could have gone either way at the last minute.
The trophy will be presented at the end of season melee which will be held at Cranleigh on Sunday.

Cranleigh Open Triples results

First of all I would like to thank everyone for turning and playing, you are all a nice crowd.
It was dry all day except for the end of the last two games then it poured.
During the day we watched 2 displays by the Red Arrows and an ear spilting display by the Euro fighter and all of this at no extra cost.
We all ate in the club most of us consuming a very good Sunday Roast and some even continued and had the pud.
The draw at the start of the day decided which piste and who you would play in our 5 game melee. Because of a team dropping out we played 9 triples and 3 doubles. This meant we didn't have any byes.
The final results where.

First Fanny. Roz Lynn and Tim
3rd Place. Jeff and Lesley

2nd Place  Ray and Dean

Winners. Richard Mark and Alan
1st Richard Mark and Alan 4 wins + 56
2nd Dean and Ray 4 wins + 32
3rd Lesley and Jeff 4 wins + 25
4th Mike, Matt and Micheala 4 wins + 21

1st Anniversary afternoon

Saturday was the first anniversary of our clubs first meeting.
The day started wet and overcast but soon warmed up and the sun came out.
During the morning we put up the bunting and the tent. After setting out the chairs and arranging the glasses and the plates we all went off to lunch at the club.
We started playing at 2pm, our guests from ABC Kirdford where enjoying the new piste and trying to get the hang of the old.

At 3pm our youngest club member present cut the cake, Lesley and Jan poured the wine and we all sang happy birthday to the club.

Unfortunatly our french guest did not appear until after the cake and wine.
Eventually 14 members of the twinning group came and played, it was fun teaching our french guest how to play petanque. During the afternoon Gene from Semur told us she had been asked by the Semur boule club to approach us and find out whether we would be prepared to visit Semur for a weekends petanque and would we be willing to arrange for them to visit us.  After our meeting she is going back to arrange both our visit to them and their visit to us.

Inter-regional Championships at Brean Sands

We have just been invited to send our team to the Inter-Regional Championships at Brean Sands, Somerset.
This championships will bring together all of the regions in England plus the Welsh squad. It is held over two days at Pontins Holiday resort in Brean Sands, Somerset. We will be taking part as a combined team in division two. Our team missed out on the chance to play in divison one by just one game. It is still a good start for a Club that as only been playing for less than a year and two of our team also started playing less than a year ago.
Well done team get ready to receive your shirts

Cranleigh hosted two teams tonight, one from Cranleigh 41 club and the other from Ex RT of Guildford (a few of these players came from Cranleigh).
This is an annual event for these clubs, they have played inter club competitions in Stall ball, Golf, Tiddly Winks etc etc. This year it was boules.
8 players from each team played doubles and the eventually winners where Guildford.
Cranlegih Village Club provided a two course dinner with coffee for all of the players plus 10 spectators.

Home Nations Qualifier at Luton

Tony, Lesley, Sue and Jeff

The team from Cranleigh travelled up to Luton on Sunday to take part in The Home Nations Qualifier.
This competition is to select 8 teams to travel to Inverness in August to play against teams from Scotland and Wales.
Thirty teams traveled to Luton for the competition from all over the UK.
We went for the experiance of a top class competition.
After arriving at 8.45 we booked in and awaited the draw.  It was very hot and very windy.
Our first game was against a strong team comprising two members of this years English team.
After we took a 6 - 1 lead, they got their act together and took the game 13 - 6
We went on to win the next 3 games against very good competition including Graham and Kim from Adur assisted by our regional President Bernie.
We went into the last game knowing that we must either win or get a very high score to make it to Inverness.
Our team quickly made it to 11 - 6, then the oppostion changed the line up of their team and went on to beat us 13 - 11.
We spent the next hour awaiting for all of the results to come in, hoping that our points difference would take us through. But alas we didn't do enought.
We went to play and we played well. Bring on Wales next year
